Challenging the Nimzo-Indian
–
Every competitive chess player needs a sound grasp of how to play this opening – and especially how to meet the most popular lines. The Nimzo-Indian is Black’s most respected answer to 1.d4 and is immensely popular at all levels, from club championship to world championship. In fact, the reputation of the Nimzo is so high that some players prefer simply to avoid it. American International master David Vigorito shows that this negative approach is unnecessary.

Play the Semi-Slav – The Semi-Slav is one of the most popular chess openings that Black can play against 1.d4. The Semi-Slav is both sound and ambitious, which makes it a favorite of the elite. This book provides expert guidance on how to play this exciting variation. The author clearly explains which lines he recommends for Black and even offers a choice of replies against the main lines.

Chess Explained: The Main-Line Slav – The Main-Line Slav is one of the key battlegrounds of modern chess, with adherents among all levels of chess-players. It is notoriously difficult for White to prove any advantage against Black’s solid set-up, while the lack of symmetry in the position provides scope for creative players to obtain winning chances with either colour. This book discusses all major lines following the moves 1 d4 d5 2 c4 c6 3 Nf3 Nf6 4 Nc3 dxc4.

Understanding the Marshall Attack – The Marshall Attack is a chess opening like no other. Rather than subjecting himself to the ‘Spanish torture’ so typical in the Ruy Lopez, Black simply gives away a centre pawn. But in return, he gets long-term attacking chances and activity that can persist well into the endgame. It is almost a century since Frank Marshall invented his sensational gambit, but it is still controversial, and more popular than ever amongst the best players in the world. In their hands, the Marshall Attack looks remarkably solid – even if White neutralizes Black’s attacking chances and remains a pawn up, Black often achieves full positional compensation.

Attacking the King’s Indian, Volume 1 – The King’s Indian remains a hugely popular opening at all levels of chess – unsurprising given the attacking opportunities it offers. In many of the ultra-sharp main lines, both sides can fight for the initiative. White frequently wins the queenside battle but this often turns out to be a Pyrrhic victory as Black wins the war by checkmating on the kingside! Black is hunting the enemy king and this gives him a psychological edge in practical play. Here IM David Vigorito presents an aggressive repertoire for Black based on the main lines.

Attacking the King’s Indian, Volume 2
– IM David Vigorito presents an aggressive King’s Indian repertoire for Black based on the main lines. Vigorito is renowned for his opening expertise, and his suggested lines are full of innovative ideas. In addition, his lucid explanations of the key plans and tactics will benefit all players. Volume 2 deals with the Four Pawns Attack, the Fianchetto Variation, the Averbakh Variation and many other lines.

Chess Developments: The Sicilian Dragon – The Sicilian Dragon is unquestionably one of the most popular and eagerly discussed chess openings. The main lines often lead to extremely complicated positions in which both sides attack freely, one slip could be fatal, and a deep knowledge of the opening theory and nuances could prove to be a decisive advantage. In this book, David Vigorito examines the most important and instructive Sicilian Dragon games in recent years. Vigorito is well-known for his opening expertise, and his work is always full of innovative ideas.

Chess Developments: The Grünfeld – The Grünfeld is a dynamic opening in which Black allows White to build an imposing pawn centre before plotting its downfall by a series of attacks with pawns and pieces. This ambitious, hypermodern approach is popular from club level all the way through to the World’s elite. In this book, David Vigorito selects and examines the most important and instructive Grünfeld games from recent years, highlighting the main developments and novelties for both White and Black.

pawn_endgamesPAWN ENDGAMES

IM John-Paul Wallace, GM Jesse Kraai and IM David Vigorito analyze endgames with pawns. Some of their conclusions: 1) In king and pawn endings, an extra pawn is decisive in more than 90 percent of the cases. 2) In endgames with pieces and pawns, an extra pawn is a winning advantage in 50 to 60 percent of the cases. It becomes more decisive if the stronger side has a positional advantage. 3) The king plays an important role in the endgame. 4) Initiative is more important in the endgame than in other phases of the game. In rook endgames the initiative is usually worth at least a pawn. 5) Two connected passed pawns are very strong. If they reach their sixth rank they are generally as powerful as a rook.
